The purpose of the BREEAM In-Use scheme is to certify the performance of the asset under assessment. In instances where the asset is part of a larger portfolio of assets managed by a single company, the Assessor should provide evidence to confirm compliance that is specific to the asset under assessment. For all issues, except those listed in the table below, evidence that refers to a portfolio, or a sub-section of a portfolio, will not be enough by itself to confirm compliance.
For the following issues, documents or policies that are adopted at a portfolio level and provided as evidence can be accepted only if the following are achieved:
| Issue | Requirements |
| Man 03 | When targeting Answers C-F, the proactive maintenance policies may be enforced at a portfolio level for similar assets however evidence of maintenance reports under criterion 3 must be asset specific. |
| Man 04 | A portfolio-level environmental management policy can be considered compliant. However, documentary evidence must be provided confirming that it is applied at the assessed asset in relation to each answer selected. |
| Ene 23 | When targeting Answers C or D all evidence must be asset- (and scope-) specific*. However, when targeting Answer E, although there must be evidence of asset specific data and targets as well as evidence to show these are analysed and reported internally, the public report can be at a portfolio level.

| Wat 13 | As per Ene 23, however evidence to confirm compliance with criterion 3 can also be enforced at a portfolio level. |
| Wat 14 | The water strategy can be adopted at a portfolio level however compliance with KBCN1673 must be satisfied at the asset level, i.e. the format and wording of the strategy must be applicable at asset level and documentary evidence is provided to confirm that it is applied at the asset under assessment. |
| Rsc 05 | The sustainable procurement plan can be adopted at a portfolio level provided criterion 8 is suitably addressed. |
